SINGAPORE AROUND THE WORLD connect 2019 • 99 September, 2018 The Ireland Funds Singapore was instru- mental in bringing the one-man show “God Has No Country” by renowned writer, teacher and actor Donal Courtney, to Singapore. The play tells the amazing and little known story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty who heroically saved 6,500 Jews and Allied POWs during the second world war through what became known as the “Rome escape line”. The audiences in Singapore were educated and entertained for three nights with this amazing story of valor which Donal brought to life with energy and his engaging Q&A after each performance. Thanks to a great collaboration with three of the major Arts schools in Singapore, namely LASALLE College of the Arts, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, and Intercultural Theatre Institute, Donal deliveredworkshopsfortheirstudentsinwriting, actingandtheIrish storytelling tradition. Students and faculty members found Donal’s workshops incredibly valuable with his unique take on acting and connecting with audiences. The series returned in September with a rousing showcase of talent from both the Irish and Singapore communities in a wonderful evening of culture, music and craic hosted once again at LASALLE College of the Arts. The program of music, poetry, prose and drama ranged from beauti- fully haunting to riotous hilarity and included a talent from the LASALLE student body and from the Irish community. Notable among the performers was a Sebastian Barry piece by LASAL- LE’s Prof. Michael Early, and we were delighted to welcome the new Irish Ambassador Patrick Bourne to Singapore and to his impressive debut on stage at the event with W B Yeats's "The Stolen Child". The atmospheric jazz café set up combined with the Irish traditional music skills of Gerry Cox and James Chan, made for a truly memorable night. Red Dot Green Dot 1 2 3 1 Amb.
