CREATIVE ARTS AT NUI GALWAY

Galway plays a vital role in the cultural life of Ireland – rooted as it is between Connemara, the Burren on the Wild Atlantic Way. The collision of language, culture and history produces a unique locale which nurtures creativity, independence of thought, and unique perspective.

NUI Galway stands at the heart of this creative crucible. Central to our vision is a deep commitment to the arts. Over many decades a vibrant artistic ethos has been developed at NUI Galway fostering the talents of internationally-acclaimed writers, actors and directors, enriching national culture and confirming Galway’s position as a city of creativity and innovation – European Capital of Culture 2020. Many important cultural initiatives trace their origins to NUI Galway, among these, Druid Theatre Company, AnTaibhdhearc – the national Irish language theatre, Macnas, Music for Galway and Galway International Arts Festival – each founded by students or members of the University community.

NUI Galway is also internationally-renowned as a centre of academic endeavour in the creative arts, with distinctive and prestigious programmes in drama and theatre, arts management, film, digital media, publishing and creative writing, with new programmes in music recently established. The University is home to one of world’s most important collections of Irish theatre archives, including the Abbey Theatre and Gate Theatre digital archives, the papers of Druid Theatre, Galway International Arts Festival, Conradh na Gaeilge and the Lyric Theatre, as well as papers of leading writers, broadcasters, artists and thinkers including Thomas Kilroy, John McGahern, Siobhan McKenna, Éamon de Buitléar, Mary Robinson, Douglas Hyde, Lady Gregory and many others. The proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Creative Arts at NUI Galway.
