DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

THE HONORABLE RAYMOND W. KELLY
Former New York Police Commissioner

We are delighted to honor Former Police Commissioner, Ray Kelly, with a Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the wellbeing of our city.
Raymond W. Kelly was appointed police commissioner of the City of New York by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in January 2002, making Commissioner Kelly the first person to hold the post for a second, separate tenure.

He also served as police commissioner under Mayor David Dinkins from 1992 to 1994. In 2002, under Commissioner Kelly’s leadership, the NYPD became the first municipal police department in the country to develop its own counterterrorism bureau and global intelligence program. He revamped New York City’s Police Department into a world-class counter-terrorism operation, operating in conjunction with the CIA. Prior to September 11, 2001 there were fewer than two dozen officers working on terrorism full time; ten years later under his leadership there were over 1,000 officers.

A 43-year veteran of the NYPD, Commissioner Kelly served in 25 different commands in the department before being named Police Commissioner.

Please join us in honoring a great Irish American and pay tribute to him for his service to the City of New York.

About Us

The American Ireland Fund is part of The Worldwide Ireland Funds, a philanthropic network across 12 countries that has raised over $450 million for worthy causes in Ireland and Irish causes around the world. It is the largest network of friends of Ireland dedicated to supporting programs of peace and reconciliation, arts and culture, education and community development. Founded in 1976, The Worldwide Ireland Funds have benefited over 1,500 organizations. Funds raised are contributed by private philanthropists and organizations.

In response to the severe downtu in the Irish economy, The Worldwide Ireland Funds launched the Promising Ireland Campaign in 2009 to raise $100 million for charities experiencing an increased demand for their services at a time of a major reduction in resources. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of donors, the initial goal has been exceeded and the target has been doubled to now raise $200 million. As a result, one third of the Funds’ total eaings since foundation have been raised during the five years of the Campaign. Over 650 outstanding projects and organizations have received support from the Promising Ireland Campaign.

The American Ireland Fund holds a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator in recognition of efficiency, sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.
