Ireland – Dublin – The Ireland Funds Leadership Series Tommy Breen 2017

On 24 October 2017 the Dublin Young Leaders were treated to a lecture in the Leadership Series from Tommy Breen, kindly hosted by Davy Stockbrokers.

Tommy Breen, was the former CEO of DCC plc from May 2008 until July 2017. Having graduated from Queen’s University Belfast with an Economics degree, Tommy joined KPMG in Dublin in 1980 and worked there for five years qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. In 1985 he joined DCC which was then Ireland’s leading venture and development capital business and subsequently worked in London for DCC for two years, returning to Dublin in 1990. At that time DCC was embarking on a change in strategy which led to the development of the business as a broadly-based sales, marketing, distribution and business support services group. Subsequently, Tommy held positions as Managing Director of each of DCC’s Energy, IT and Environmental divisions. Tommy is also a Non-Executive Director of Essentra plc, a UK headquartered FTSE 250 company and of Social Entrepreneurs Ireland, an Ireland Funds Flagship Grantee.

Tommy spoke of the strong culture of growth within DCC, and it’s continued commitment, not only to its development but development of its staff. He also detailed his personal views on the necessity of philanthropy, and spoke of DCC’s pride in being an ongoing sponsor of Social Entrepreneurs Ireland, and how much they enjoyed that partnership. He also spoke about his love of entrepreneurship and how he hoped to become more involved with helping young entrepreneurs in the coming years.

The Young Leaders gained a huge amount of insight into DCC’s culture, and corporate culture within such a successful international company. Sincere thanks to Tommy Breen for sharing his time, and his significant talent with the Young Leaders.
