Ciarán Cannon was appointed as Ireland’s Minister for the Diaspora and International Development in June, 2017. He has been a member of Dáil Eireann since 2011, representing Galway East, and was formerly Minister for Training & Skills at the Department of Education. As Minister for the Diaspora, he is responsible for developing Government policy in respect of Irish communities abroad, including across the United States, and for working with the ‘global Irish’ to deepen their links with Ireland. Over the coming months, he will lead preparations for a referendum on extending voting rights in presidential elections to citizens outside the State. A strong advocate of the use of technology in education and founder of ‘‘Excited – The Digital Learning Movement’’, the Minister is keen to exploit new technologies to strengthen Ireland’s engagement with its diaspora, particularly younger generations. He will also draw on his experience as an award-winning musician and songwriter to actively promote Irish culture as a means of developing and maintaining relations between Ireland and the Irish abroad.
