The Sydney leg of the Ireland Funds’ Global 5K took place in Centennial Park over the weekend. Over 90 runners lined up at the start of what was to be a sweltering Spring day to try take home the fastest global time. Also up for grabs was an incredible prize of two adult round trip tickets for the highest fundraiser, compliments of our very generous partner, Delta Airlines.
This year’s line-up included two-time winner of Sydney’s City2Surf, Harry Summers, as well as local AFL superstars Tadhg Kennelly and Michael O’Loughlin. Joining them on the start line were a number of members of the Ireland Funds’ Young Leaders and friends, all hoping for a shot at the prize.
Sydney’s fastest male runner was Barry Carey with a blistering time of 17:11, with our fastest female runner being Geraldine Campbell, who crossed the line in 22:20.
Run Results
The day was made extra-special as the Young Leaders had the privilege of presenting a cheque in the sum of $10,000 to Michael O’Loughlin and Shirley Crowley from the Go Foundation, the Young Leaders’ chosen Australian Project for 2017.
Like all great Irish-Australian events, the race was followed by an incredible BBQ, courtesy of Eamon Eastwood of Taste Ireland.
A huge thank you to all those who took part in the race, the marshals and event sponsors and a special thank you to Niamh Cunningham and Hazel McDwyer of the Sydney Committee who made sure our first time hosting the run ourselves was a successful event.
