Once again the beautiful St Georges Hill Golf Club was the setting for The Ireland Fund of Great Britain’s (IFGB) Golf Tournament. An enjoyable day of golf was had by the IFGB golfers on the renowned course, though strong winds provided a distinct challenge.
That evening players were thanked by Golf Committee Chair Ruairi Conneely for their loyal support to IFGB and its ongoing work to help vulnerable Irish living in the UK. After dinner Basil Geoghegan, IFGB Co-Chair, spoke to the guests about his wonderful achievement of climbing Mount Everest in May. Basil did the climb both as a personal achievement and also to raise funds for Irish survivors of Institutional abuse. He has a target of £100,000 and has raised over £80,000 to date.
Basil’s wonderful account was followed by an impromptu Q&A session with the former New Zealand international rugby player Zinzan Brookes, who spoke of his predictions and thoughts on the Rugby World Cup (which sadly for Ireland were correct!).
The winning teams on the day were Devine Homes Group led by Jim Devine, who were also last year’s winners. Paul Hastings LLP team captained by Christian Parker came in 2nd place and Quinn London led by Seamus Quinn was placed 3rd
Prizes of Tipperary Crystal which were kindly sponsored by Kiely Bros were presented to the winners by Basil Geoghegan. The Grand Draw prizes were kindly donated by Sheen Falls Lodge, Dromoland Castle, St Georges Hill Golf Club Surrey, London Irish Rugby, Callaway and Golf Monthly Magazine.
