Australia – Young Leaders Global 5K 2022

The Ireland Funds Australia Global 5k 2022

Ireland Funds Australia held our annual Global 5K for the 9th year on Saturday 24th September 2022 allowing us to connect and be together in a truly unique and global way depending on our participants location.

We encouraged participants from all around Australia and globally to join us again this year, runners and walkers, young and old alike, by downloading our SportSplits tracker app to practice and receive tips and tricks in the lead up to the run.

After a month of rain, we were very happy to see the sun trying to peak out from behind the clouds on Saturday 24 September allowing our 153 participants to completetheir run on a 5km course of their choosing, their times being tracked via our event app. In Sydney our Young Leaders were joined by those that could make it to meet at the iconic Opera House for a lap around Sydney Harbour finishing at Mrs Jones Terrace at The Orient enjoying incredible views and a well-deserved post run catch up, thank you to our host Peter Ryan from Ryan Hotels.

It was truly a unique experience to watch our friends from every corner of Australia doing their runs and comparing their times to others across Australia and the world.

We were given some training tips in the lead up to the run by Sari Coakley who was the fastest female on the day with a time of 20.20 and our fastest male runner was Shane Massey with a blistering time of 18.54.

As a personal tribute to the late and much-loved former Chair of The Ireland Funds Australia Sydney Young Leaders, Andrea (Penny) McElhinney our perpetual trophy in Andrea’s honour was awarded to the second fastest female, which this year was Geraldine Campbell with a time of 21.38, Geraldine has been our fastest female for the past three years.
