The Sydney leg of the Ireland Funds’ Global 5K took place last Saturday at Centennial Park in the city’s Eastern Suburbs. Over 220 runners participated in the fun run on a gloriously sunny spring morning, with the best runners competing for fastest global time. The winners were awarded the inaugural Andrea (Penny) McElhinney Perpetual Trophy in honour of the late and much loved former Chair of the Ireland Funds Australia Sydney Young Leaders.
This year Swans legend Michael O’Loughlin, co-founder of the GO Foundation kicked off proceedings with an acknowledgement of country and a warm-up. Joining them on the starting line were a members of the Ireland Funds Australia Young Leaders and friends and supporters of the Ireland Funds, all hoping to nudge out the competition to claim top prize.
Sydney’s fastest male runner was Jason Ibrahim with an impressive time of 17.40 with our fastest female runner Eva Laverty, vanquishing the opposition when she crossed the line in 20.10
Like all great Irish-Australian events, the race was followed by a deliciously tasty BBQ, courtesy of Taste Ireland.
