2 0 1 4 A N N U A L R E P O R T O U R H I S T O R Y The American Ireland Fund is part of The Worldwide Ireland Funds an international philanthropic network operating in 12 countries that has raised over 500 million for worthy causes in Ireland and Irish causes around the world. IT IS THE LARGEST NETWORK OF FRIENDS OF IRELAND DEDICATED TO SUPPORTING PROGRAMS OF PEACE AND RECONCILIATION ARTS AND CULTURE EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT. Founded in 1976 The Worldwide Ireland Funds have beneted over 3000 organizations. Funds raised are contributed by private sources individuals corporations and foundations. In 1976 Dan Rooney owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers football team and the former U.S. Ambassador to Ireland along with fellow Pittsburgh-based businessman Sir Anthony OReilly created what was then The Ireland Fund. The Ireland Fund and the American Irish Foundation founded by Irish President Eamonn De Valera and U.S. President John F. Kennedy merged at a White House ceremony on St. Patricks Day 1987 to form what is today THE AMERICAN IRELAND FUND. Due to your support and that of Donors across the country our gross earnings exceeded 31 millionour second best outcome ever. To put this into context in 2009 the rst year of the Promising Ireland Campaign our total revenue amounted to 12.3 million. This illustrates clearly the effect of the Campaign. At the end of 2014 the total raised by the Campaign was 183 million putting us ahead of schedule to reach our Campaign goal of 200 milliontwice our original target. Of course the real success of The American Ireland Fund is measured on the ground and I am glad to say our grant and program services expenditure last year amounted to 24 million or 2 million a month. This made us one of the largest if not the largest private grant maker across the island of Ireland. In addition to our grant making we ran a series of programs to help support the not for prot sector in Ireland. Most importantly we hosted seminars throughout the country on fundraising which were attended by over 500 organizations. This is all a part of our agenda of promoting philanthropy in Ireland so that our Donors are not just giving to the Irish but with the Irish. In 2014 we began to plan for the post-Campaign phase to invest in this organization for the ten years following our 40th anniversary in 2016. We are planning an ambitious phase of investment and growth and will be rolling the plan out over the next two years. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of donors in 2013 The Worldwide Ireland Funds announced that it was doubling the original target for its Promising Ireland Campaign from 100 million to 200 million. The new target required that the Fund raise on average 2 million a month an objective successfully achieved in 2014 which positioned the Fund well as it entered the nal year of the Campaign. At a time when needs everywhere are heightened our donors have redoubled their generosity. They are really standing up for Ireland when it is needed most. The success of the Promising Ireland Campaign is a tribute to our remarkable donors and their generosity. Need across the island of Ireland increased and therefore the benchmark of The American Ire- land Funds response increased as well. Supporters want to help sustain the work of organizations on the ground in Ireland helping those people who need it most. The Campaign title reects both our commitment to helping Ireland at a difcult time and our belief in Irelands ability to recover. In Dublin alone over 500 children are living in temporary hotel accommodation due to an ever-lengthening queue for social housing. The number of homeless people in Cork has quadrupled in two years. In Dublin the number has tripled in the last ve years. At 204 billion US investment in Ireland is higher than the total invested in the BRIC economies combined and three times that invested in China. Unemployment is declining in Ireland and has dropped below 10 for the rst time since 2009. It provided us with the support that we needed to research publish and educate on childrens welfare issues. The Ireland Funds nod of approval also helped us to raise funds from other philanthropic bodies. We cannot deliver without maintaining our independent voice and this is why The Ireland Funds support is so critical to us. Our total revenue for 2014 exceeded 20 million for the fth consecutive year and only the seventh time in our 39 year history. Thanks to the generosity of our donors The American Ireland Fund awarded more than 24 million in grants and program services to 364 worthy projects in 2014 across the island of Ireland and Irish communities worldwide. The American Ireland Fund has achieved the highest recognition for its financial management and corporate governance in the US and has been used as a role model for other international diaspora fundraising organizations. We have achieved and maintained a 4 star out of 4 star status from Charity Navigator which is based upon Charity Navigators detailed and independent review of our financial management and reporting structure as well as our corporate governance and transparency policies.
